Frequently Asked Questions
How does Stache compare to other Read it Later apps (like Pocket/Instapaper/etc.)?
We strive to make Stache a great value by offering power-user features at a better price point than our competitors.
Why Stache:
- Better Compatibility. This is subjective, but we find Stache is compatible with more websites than Instapaper or Pocket.
- Better Reader Mode. We’ve tried to make the reader mode in Stache just a little nicer than other apps. For example, by including cover images.
- No Recommendations. Stache doesn’t bother you with suggestions. Stache is about helping you read what you want to read better, not monetizing your attention. Some people want social features or suggestions and Stache may not be the right app for them. That’s okay.
- Full Version Reading. Stache attempts to save the full version of a webpage for offline reading along with the reader version. This can be hit or miss depending on the webpage, but other major services don’t seem to offer this anymore. This is useful if you’re away from the internet and need to see something on a page that isn’t included in the reader version.
- Notes and Highlights. Stache lets you take notes and highlight text. To read with intent you need a system to help you remember the most important parts. Not every read-it-later app has Notes or Highlights. Pocket only offers Highlights. Stache has both.
- Better Filtering. Do need to find all of your unread, favorited links tagged “Send to Mom”? Every favorited link with a highlight? Every archived, favorited link tagged “Book”? Stache can do it. I’m not sure any other read-it-later app lets you filter quite as well as Stache.
- Save PDFs. Stache downloads PDFs for offline viewing.
- Better Organization. Stache has tags, which are more flexible than folders. This isn’t uncommon, but its not universal.
- Images. Stache saves images at the time of page download, not when you first view the page. With some apps when you go offline (like on an airplane) you may discover all you have is the text.
- Keyboard Shortcuts You can do almost everything in Stache with a keyboard shortcut, including changing links and scrolling. View List of Keyboard Shortcuts.

Is there a web or Windows of Stache? What about an Android app?
There isn’t, and unfortunately its not likely there ever will be. Stache is built on top of Apple iCloud, which enables fast, reliable sync while maintaining total user privacy - we can’t see any of your data in Stache, including what links you’ve saved, your highlights, or your notes. Unfortunately this mostly limits the platforms we can support to Apple devices. A web app is potentially something we could offer down the line if a lot of userse ask for it, but creating Android or Windows apps would require a total replacement of our sync system.
If enough people ask for it then adding more platforms is something we’ll look into.
Why is content missing from a page in Stache?
Assuming the content is not behind a paywall, its probably just a compatibility issue.
Getting rid of the clutter and extracting just the useful content from a webpage is a tough thing to get right, especially when it has to work on any web page on the internet. We strive for perfection, but there will always be some sites that don’t work well with Stache (or any other read-it-later app) for various reasons.
If a site is important to you and doesn’t look good please let us know so we can take a look. For very popular sites we can likely write a custom extractor to give users the best possible experience. For others pages there may be a bug we need to look into.
