Who We Are

Stache is built and maintained by Jon Schneider, who is also its Data Protection Officer. Please email [email protected] with any questions or data deletion requests.

1.0 Information We Collect

The short answer: Not a whole lot, and none of it is personally identifiable or traceable to you except when you contact us. Our philosophy is to collect only minimum amount of data we need to understand how our service is used and what is causing errors so we can improve our product, and to do so entirely anonymously. The only personal information we have about you is when you email us.

iPhone, iPad, and Mac Apps

All of your application data (including, but not limited to, saved links, highlights, tags, and notes) are saved on your devices and in Apple iCloud. We do not ever store or have access to your data - your data syncs directly between your devices and Apple. Since sync is handled through Apple iCloud you don’t need to create an account and we don’t need to collect any personal information for you to use our apps.

We track product usage data (“Analytics”), such as how often the app is used and when errors occur. These Analytics are anonymous and cannot be traced back to you, and do not contain any personal information or information about the links you have interacted with. We use these analytics to understand how people use our apps so we can improve them.

In addition to usage analytics we also collect anonymous crash logs so we can track down bugs. Crash logs do not contain personal information.

We store anonymous, aggregated product usage data forever so we can monitor trends over time and identify areas of product improvements. We may also use this to design and measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns.

Chrome and Edge Extensions

Our Chrome and Edge extensions send links you save directly from your browser to your Apple iCloud storage. We cannot see the links you save.

There are currently no analytics inside our Chrome and Edge extensions. We may add analytics in the future so we can understand how people use our extensions and what errors are occurring we can improve them. If we do, we’ll update this privacy policy accordingly.

Webpage

When you visit our website we use analytics to track what pages you visit and what links you click. We use these analytics to understand how people discover our webpage and how they use it so that we can make it more intuitive. Our analytics does not use cookies and does not collect any personal information.

We store anonymous, aggregated website usage data forever so we can monitor trends over time and identify areas of improvement. We may also use this to design and measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns.

Support Requests and Emails

When you contact us, you are sharing your email address and most likely your name as a part of your email, as well as any other information you send to us including the contents of your communications. We never share this information with third parties, and we only use it to assist with your request. We do not currently have an email list for marketing or product update purposes, but if we ever start one we will never add your email address to it automatically when you contact us. We hate it when companies do that.

To aid in troubleshooting issues, our apps contain the ability to collect detailed usage information (“Logs”) inside Stache that contain a record of recent activity. Collecting Logs is disabled by default and must be turned on in settings, and logs are never turned on or sent to us without your permission. When you request assistance from us we may request you turn on logging, reproduce the issue you are experiencing, and send us the logs to allow us to troubleshoot the issue you are experiencing. These logs contain personal information, including the URLs of links you save and interact with. You do not have to send logs to us. However, it may not be possible to diagnose the cause of issues without them. If you do send us logs we will never sell or share them with third parties.

Any emails or communications you send to us will be retained until we run out of inbox space and need to start deleting old emails or until you request we delete them, whichever comes first. We retain these emails so we can see our history of communication with you if you contact us again. Snippets of your communications or logs you send us may be stored in our internal bug tracking and software development tools to facilitate investigating issues that you report to us but they will always be anonymized and never be stored with or containing your personal details such as your name or contact information.

2.0 How we share information

We never sell your information to third parties.

We use trusted third-party services to collect anonymous product and webpage usage analytics and crash reports. These services have been screened to only collect and store data anonymously.

For customer support we use an email provider, which can see your email address and email content when you contact us.

3.0 Managing Your Application Data

3.1 Data Export

You can export a copy your application data (including your saved links, tags, favorites, highlights, and notes) at any time. On iPhone and iPad data export is located in the application’s Settings page, and on Mac it is under the File menu. This export can be imported back into Links if you are using it as a backup.

3.2 Data Deletion

You can delete your application data from your device(s) and in iCloud directly from our applications. On iOS you can do this from the application’s Settings page, and on Mac it is located in the Help Menu under “Manage Data”.

Because we cannot see your data we have no way to recover your data if you change your mind, so we recommend that you export and save a copy of your data before deleting it.

3.3 Data Saved in Apple iCloud

Your application data, including the links you save, tags, notes, and highlights are all stored in Apple iCloud. Apple’s own Privacy Policy and User Agreement cover the use and storage of your data with them.

Our service lets you view and open webpages that aren’t owned or operated by us. These webpages are not governed by our Privacy Policy and we strongly advise you to review the Privacy Policy of every webpage you visit.

5.0 Your Rights Under GDPR

We respect your privacy rights and provide you with reasonable access to the Personal Data that you may have provided through your use of our services. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) affords residents of the European Economic Area with certain rights related to personal data, and we make these options available to all users, not just those living in the European Economic Area.

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to:

  • Access, Correct, Amend, or Delete Data: You have the right to request access to, correction of, amendment of, or deletion of your personal data that we store, subject to our need for such data in connection with legitimate business purposes or legal requirements.

  • Data Portability: You have the right to data portability for the information you provide to us. This means that you can request a copy of your personal data in a commonly used electronic format so that you can manage and move it as you wish.

  • Object to Processing or Restrict Processing: You can ask us to stop using all or some of your personal data or to limit our use of it.

  • Withdraw Consent: If we have collected and processed your personal data with your consent, then you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time.

  • Lodge a Complaint with a Supervisory Authority: You have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority if you feel that our processing of your personal data infringes on the GDPR.

Please email us using the email address in Contact Us section of this policy if you would like to exercise any of these rights. Please note that exporting and deleting your application data is already available inside our clients, and we cannot perform these operations for you in response to support requests because we do not have access to your data - application data is stored in Apple iCloud and we cannot access, edit, or delete it. Only your devices can view, edit, or delete your application data.

6.0 California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) provides California residents with specific rights regarding their personal information, and like the GDPR we make these rights available to all our users. These rights are similar to the rights afforded to users by GDPR. These rights include:

  • Right to Know and Access Information: You have the right to request that we disclose certain information about our collection and use of your personal information over the past 12 months. Upon receipt of a verifiable request, we will provide you with information about the categories of personal information we collected, the sources of that information, our purpose for collecting or selling the information, the categories of third parties with whom we share that information, and the specific pieces of personal information we collected about you.

  • Right to Request Deletion: You have the right to request that we delete any of your personal information that we collected from you and retained, subject to certain exceptions. Once we receive and confirm your verifiable request, we will delete (and direct our service providers to delete) your personal information from our records, unless an exception applies.

  • Right to Opt-Out of the Sale of Personal Information: If we sell your personal information, you have the right to opt-out of the sale of your personal information.

  • Right to Non-Discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your CCPA rights.

Please email us using the email address in the Contact Us section of this policy if you would like to exercise any of these rights. Please note that exporting and deleting your application data is already available inside our clients, and we cannot perform these operations for you in response to support requests because we do not have access to your data - application data is stored in Apple iCloud and we cannot access, edit, or delete it. Only your devices can view, edit, or delete your application data.

7.0 Other Privacy Laws

Other countries and regions may have their own privacy laws, often similar to the GDPR and CCPA covered above. To exercise any rights you may have under your local laws please email us using the email address in the Contact Us section of this policy and we’ll figure out what we need to do. Please note that exporting and deleting your application data is already available inside our clients, and we cannot perform these operations for you in response to support requests because we do not have access to your data - application data is stored in Apple iCloud and we cannot access, edit, or delete it. Only your devices can view, edit, or delete your application data.

8.0 Changes

We review and update this Privacy Policy from time to time as the services we provide, services we use, and data we collect changes. We recommend you regularly check this Privacy Policy for updates. You can see the date of the last update to this Privacy Policy at the top of this page.

9.0 Contact Us

If you have any questions or concerns about our use of your personal information, please contact our Data Protection Officer using the contact details provided above. At this time we only have the ability to receive and send English language communications.
